WHAT EVERY CHEF SHOULD KNOW BEFORE ENTERING A KITCHEN
Buying kitchen supplies is an exciting enterprise for many of you. Those that become most excited are the chefs. This is the bread and butter for most chefs. Hold on for a second though. You don’t want to become too excited and buy the wrong things. Surely, you won’t need to purchase commercial refrigerators.
Some of you might be in this situation right now. I am here to make it easier for you. Here are some simple tips to follow when buying kitchen supplies.
1)Pots and pans are not the be all and end all of the universe. Some beginner chefs make the mistake of buying up all these pots and pans, when they only intend to cook simple things.
Most recipes only require the bare minimum. If a recipe calls for pots and pans, you will only need a few. Do not get crazy. I have known some chefs to go crazy and buy up the store. Most of the pots and pans end up not being used. Look at what you are going to be serving at your establishment. If you are keeping it simple, do not buy the bigger things.
2)There is a lot of truth to the higher-end stuff. Supplies that are higher-quality will last longer. This will reduce the amount of spending you do. It will cost you more upfront. When you look at the bigger picture though, you will be doing yourself a favor.
Another added bonus to the higher-end stuff is that it kills the prep time. You will have to spend more time on prep by using the lower-quality supplies. Think about it.
3)The higher-end stuff will make cleaning up so much easier. It’s true. You will be making less of a mess. Your time in the kitchen preparing and cleaning will be cut in half. The higher-end supplies basically take care of themselves. This is what they are there for.
4)Reading the directions does help. I know this might sound trivial, but there is something to this. Some people like to add their own stuff into the mix. This is okay, but you need to know what you are doing.
If you are just starting out, I suggest becoming best friends with the directions. This will cut down on so many hassles. It will also make less of a mess.
SOME ENDING THOUGHTS
Knives are a good thing to have in stock. Buy something that is between high-end and low-quality. You never want to go to the extreme on either side. The lower-end will not be sharp enough. The higher-end will be too sharp. Farberware is good brand to buy. I recommend this to professional chefs and those working from home.
You might also want to get a baking dish. A glass Pyrex works the best. Make sure it’s the 9 by 13. This one will work for all occasions.
